Getting my Level 3 was something I had long aspired to - going all the way back to 2005, when I got my Level 2 on a joint 2/3 course up in Ottawa. Seeing the difference between the levels made me realize I had work to do if I wanted to get it.

Justin Crabtree receives Ontario 2017 Youth Scholarship Posted on Apr 3rd, 2017

Justin Crabtree

The Ontario Region has been promoting a Youth Scholarship Program to encourage young skiers to become CANSI ski instructors since 2006. Parents, youth or anyone who would like to nominate a person who is between the ages of 15 to 21 years of age at the start of the course can go to our Youth Scholarship policy on CANSI’s website for more details.

This year we year we recognize Justin Crabtree, who currently is the youngest member of CANSI at the age. Here is what Justin had to say about his experience on his first CANSI course - XC Level I certification at Hardwood Ski and Bike, Barrie Ontario:

When I found out I could take my CANSI Level I course after signing up quite late (it’s a funny story- I’ll tell you another time), I really didn’t know what to expect. I had, or at least was hoping I had, all the necessary technique down pat, but I soon found out this was just one aspect of the course. I discovered that being able to ski doesn’t necessarily make you a good teacher, as the amazing course instructors showed us what a good lesson looked like.

Alan Godbout receives Ontario 2016 Youth Scholarship Posted on Apr 16th, 2016

Alan Godbout.jpg

This winter Ontario awarded another youth scholarship. It was to Alan Godbout who passed a very challenging 3-day Telemark Level I course at Devils Glen Ski Club mid-March. Here are Alan’s words of this experience.

Things I’ve Learned in the CANSI Level I Telemark Course

Recently, I passed my Telemark Level I Course. It was nothing like my Alpine Level I Course. In that course, everyone was my own age and we learned to teach young kids through games and imitation. In this course, the next youngest participant was double my age.

Stephanie, who was 29, probably could have passed the course without even taking it. The rest of us really had to work at it. Aside from me, the rest of the participants were in their 50’s and 60’s.

Celebrating life of Larry Sinclair (1956-2015) at Highlands Nordic on June 13th, 2015 Posted on May 24th, 2015

Larry (the owner) is always working and smiling

As some of you may know already, Larry Sinclair - the owner of Highlands Nordic, one of the finest, privately funded, Nordic ski center in the country - died on Sunday Jan. 25, 2015 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Pat Elson, and daughters Megan and Kelly who (along with her husband Chanse Dionne) are now largely looking after his facility.

His death is big loss not only to Highlands Nordic, CCC (Cross Country Canada) and CCO (Cross Country Ontario), but also to CANSI Ontario. He was one of the rare Nordic ski coaches who supported not only Nordic athletes, but also recreational skiers. He always helped us whenever we wanted to run courses at his center - including the CANSI National seminars in Jan. 2008 and the annual CANSI Ontario XC Course Conductor training weekends in early December.

Help us celebrate his life - by sharing some food and your stories - on Saturday, June 13th at his Highlands Nordic resort from 1 to 4 pm. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Everyone is welcome.

If you plan to come, please send an email to larryslifecelebration@gmail.com by June 8th

Otherwise, please at least share your stories here, on his obituary or on one of the other websites listed at the end of this article. Here are some memorable quotes about Larry:

He was certified by Heinz Niederhauser (co-founder of CANSI in 1976). Clare’s influence on Nordic skiers, instructors and coaches is still felt today. Synch snowplow turns - diagonal lineGreetings fellow skiers and instructors. Once again we look optimistically to the upcoming winter. Given the amount of rain and snow we had so far in Ontario, it looks like we will get as much snow as last year. Consequently, we expect correspondingly large demand for our courses.

Given that our leading Course Conductor has moved to the Pacific region, we are not able to offer you this season as many courses as we would like. However, since this February we’ve gained a new Level I Course Conductor (congratulations Wendy) we can offer two more courses.

Also always keep in mind that our Youth Scholarships are still there for the taking.

The Ontario Masters cross country ski championships will be held this year from March 9 to 11, in North Bay.
