Celebrating life of Michael Moran (1958-2006) Posted on Oct 2nd, 2006

Greetings all. In case you have not heard, it is with great sadness that I must inform you that Mike Moran - CANSI Ontario's master course conductor, a very generous teacher and talented Nordic skier - has just passed away this Saturday morning (around 9 am) in Barrie's hospital.

This is a great loss not only to his family, but also to CANSI (especially in Ontario), since Mike helped certify many Nordic ski instructors and course conductors (both in X-Country and Telemark) for many years and there is nobody who can replace him.

Here is formal announcement of his death that will be printed in The Globe and Mail newspaper. Please try to attend his celebration event this coming Tuesday in Barrie and/or make a donation to Mike Moran/Sheri Woodhouse trust. Clare Magee (a retired master course-conductor and another very generous soul) is expected to be the Master of Ceremonies.

Please pass this announcement to all the Nordic ski instructors in your club or area.

Thank you and see you there.

Michael Moran Charles Patrick

At the age of 48, after a courageous fight against cancer and a fun celebration with his family and some close friends, Mike passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday September 30, 2006. Mike is survived by his adoring wife, business partner at Sojourn and best friend Cheri Doman, his parents Gerald and Eileen, his twin brother Bill, his siblings Mary and Brendan, his very special nieces and nephews, his grand-niece and nephews, and his many in-laws. His older brother Garry predeceases Mike.

Mike had an insatiable love for outdoor adventure, travel and history. He made countless friends and inspired many he met during his journey in life.

Mike's life will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 at Tangle Creek Golf Club in Barrie. In lieu of flowers and to honour Mike's memory, friends and family may make donations to the Mike Moran/Sheri Woodhouse Trust in support of Mike's good friend's disabled daughter. Donations should be sent to 22 Cartwright Dr. Barrie, ON, L4M 6E2.

Note that Tangle Creek Golf Club is located off Molson Park Drive (aka Mapleview Dr E ?). Drive past the Ford water tower and numerous car lots to a "T" junction. Do a quick jog right then left and Tangle Creek is immediately ahead.

Just in case, here is a Google map of this golf club.

Thank you for the warm obit for Mike Moran. The instructors at the Cross Country section of Horseshoe Resort were lucky enough to have Mike come one morning a week to session with us for several winters.

We looked forward to those mornings so much it was no problem to be on the snow before 7:30.

We remember snapping cold January mornings with Mike, starting in the dark and seeing the sun come up. Some in our group are quick to learn, some not but Mike was unfailingly patient. We miss him.

What a sad day it is. Mike was such a great person and terrific instructor.

What are the chances of CANSI setting up an annual award called the Mike Moran Award for excellence in Instructing. Or a fund or ? to remember him.

Just a thought.

Mike, I will never forget you, neither will many others. Thank you for everything you taught me.
